Diagnosis Cancer! What happens next?

This essay, published In the New York Times on October 31, 2017 wrote about a mother who had a shadow on her lung that was suspicious for cancer. She called her son, who was an oncologist, who then helped her navigate the process of diagnosis and treatment decisions.

Not everyone has an oncologist in the “friends and family” circle. I had been able to help many friends and family members navigate their newly diagnosed cancer. As patients research their disease, but cannot understand the options, the process of “shared decision making” becomes challenging.  That is why I have written this book, which will be published in January 2018. As one patient said, it will be like a trusted friend  walking you through your cancer diagnosis.
