Should I take supplements?
Will large doses of vitamins and minerals help prevent cancer?
Will they help boost my immunity?
Will they help fight off my Cancer?
There is no evidence to that end. About 20 years ago, antioxidants became a big buzzword, and people were taking large doses of Vitamin E and other antioxidants. Studies have in fact shown that additional supplements of non-water soluble supplements are harmful, and can even increase cancer rates. Because Vitamins A, D, E and K are non-water soluble, the body cannot throw out excess in the urine. Water soluble vitamins B and C can be eliminated in the urine, so apart from turning the urine extra yellow, they don’t do much harm.
Certainly, eating a healthy diet with fresh fruits and vegetables, with whole grains and lean protein is a great life long habit. Minimizing processed foods should be out goal. In the Western World, our diets are quite well supplied with all essential vitamins and minerals. Most healthy people do not need supplements.
And people who are ill, really only need targeted replacement, e.g.:
-Vitamins for specific deficiencies, e.g. B 12 and folic acid for conditions with high cell turnovers, e.g. leukemias.
-Iron pills or infusions, if you are iron deficient, while you are on chemotherapy
