Should I go to a major Cancer Center?

Should I go to a major Cancer Center?

That’s always a difficult question to answer. There are pros and cons.

The pros: you have a guarantee of up to date information, being seen by someone who is immersed in the disease that you have. There are clinical trials to enroll in if you need. There is always another treatment option.

The cons: the center is usually far from home. Your doctor is often involved in research, and is away, and you are taken care of by the other people in the clinic: covering MDs, nurse practitioners, Physician Assistants. And there is always another treatment option, so it’s difficult to know when to stop.

There are uncommon diseases, when it makes a lot of sense to be seen by a dedicated specialist. For the common ones, it’s probably better to get a second opinion, and come back home. It’s closer; you get to see your own oncologist every time you need to be seen.

In the end, you have to find your comfort zone.
